Why I’m Running

When I moved to Mapleton in 2000, we were a town of just under 6,000 people. One day, inside the old city building, I saw a flyer asking for volunteers on the parks committee. I signed up—and it changed everything.

That’s where I met Orpha Dee Johnson, Mapleton’s self-proclaimed “Queen” who had lived here for over 70 years. Her love for this community was contagious. Even at 80, she was still showing up and serving. She helped me see that public service wasn’t about titles—it was about showing up, listening, and giving back.

That moment sparked something in me—and I’ve been trying to live up to her example ever since.

“It was her example that ignited my desire to serve.”
